A Sloped Backyard Transformed in Johnston, RI

A Sloped Yard Turned Into a Polished Outdoor Living Space

This Johnston, RI homeowner had a sloped backyard with significant grade change — the kind of property where usable outdoor space has to be built, not just laid down. The challenge called for a full retaining wall system before any patio could even begin.

We built a curved fieldstone retaining wall, integrated granite steps, a 950 sq ft stone paver patio on the upper level, a curved walkway at the base, and finished with fresh landscaping beds — transforming a difficult slope into a layered, functional outdoor space.

The full project — wall, patio, steps, walkway, and planting — was completed in approximately two weeks, and the homeowner left us a 5-star Google review shortly after.

How We Did It

Project Timeline — 2 Weeks

Days 1–2

Site Preparation & Excavation

Cleared the sloped area, excavated and graded the yard to establish the correct levels for both the upper patio and the lower walkway. All debris hauled off-site before any material went in.

Days 3–7

Fieldstone Retaining Wall

The wall was the backbone of the whole project. We set the curved fieldstone retaining wall by hand — each stone selected and fitted individually to follow the natural arc of the yard and hold the grade permanently.

Day 8

Granite Steps

Set the granite treads into the wall opening — carefully sized and levelled so the steps feel solid underfoot and integrate cleanly with the stone on both sides.

Days 9–11

Patio Sub-Base & Paver Installation

Laid a compacted crushed stone sub-base on the upper level, screeded bedding sand to grade, then installed the 950 sq ft of stone pavers — cutting and fitting to the curved wall edge throughout.

Day 12

Curved Walkway

Installed the lower curved walkway running along the base of the retaining wall — matching paver material and pattern to tie the lower and upper areas together visually.

Days 13–14

Landscaping, Jointing & Final Clean-Up

Applied polymeric joint sand and compacted the full paved area. Installed black mulch planting beds along the wall, added plants, and completed a full site clean-up. Customer walkthrough and handover on the final afternoon.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a patio installation take in Johnston, RI?

Most residential patio and walkway projects in Johnston, RI take 1–3 weeks depending on scope and site conditions. This project — a 950 sq ft patio with stone retaining wall, steps, walkway, and landscaping — took approximately two weeks. We'll give you a specific timeline during your free on-site estimate.

What paver materials do you use for patio and walkway installations?

We work with a range of materials including natural bluestone, tumbled granite, concrete pavers (Techo-Bloc), and fieldstone. Material choice depends on your budget, style preference, and how the surface will be used. We bring samples to your estimate when helpful.

Do I need a permit for a patio in Johnston, RI?

Most residential patios do not require a permit in Johnston, RI. However, rules vary based on project size and proximity to property lines. We handle any permit coordination as part of our service — you won't need to navigate that alone.

How do I maintain my new patio pavers?

Seal every 2–3 years to protect colour and prevent staining. Re-apply polymeric sand to any joints that loosen over time (typically after several freeze-thaw cycles). We walk every customer through the maintenance routine at project completion.

Do you offer a warranty on patio and walkway installations?

Yes — we stand behind our workmanship. If anything shifts or settles attributable to our installation, we come back and make it right. Ask us about specific warranty terms when you contact us for your free estimate.
